Veneers Q & A

What is a dental veneer?

Dental veneers are covers that are placed on teeth to hide flaws, restore a more natural look, and protect teeth from additional damage. Veneers are custom-made to provide patients with a proper fit and blend in with their natural teeth, both in shape and color.

What does the process of getting dental veneers entail?

First, a tiny amount of enamel is removed from the tooth so that dental veneer fits properly. Next, a temporary veneer is placed on the tooth while the permanent veneer is made. Permanent veneers are usually made of porcelain and custom-fabricated from impressions of the patient’s teeth that Dr. Hunte takes and sends to the dental lab. Permanent veneers are affixed to the teeth with dental cement.

What advantages do dental veneers provide?

Veneers are durable coverings that are made to last for many years. They offer cosmetic improvement, protect teeth from damage and offer an alternative to crowns and bridges, which require larger amounts of tooth enamel to be removed. Dental veneers also require less room for a proper fit than crowns and bridges.

Who is a good candidate for dental veneers?

Dental veneers are considered safe and effective for a wide-range of patients. Suitable candidates typically include those who have stained, discolored, chipped or cracked teeth. Patients with uneven spaces between their teeth or eroded tooth enamel can also benefit from having dental veneers installed. Dr. Hunte evaluates each patient to determine whether he or she is a viable candidate for veneers, or if another treatment option is preferable.

How long can patients expect dental veneers to last?

Patients who take good care of their teeth with brushing, flossing, and routine dental cleanings typically enjoy their veneers from 7-20 years.
